The L'ART POUR L'ART Music Box has been built by the artist Gerhard Benz
who transformed an old container into an oversize music box, big enough for
five musicians and their instruments. The box is set up in a busy environment (market place,
pedestrian zone). After inserting a coin, people passing by can choose which piece of music
they want to hear by pressing a button. Now the music box opens and the ensemble plays the
desired title. All titles offered are contemporary compositions of hit-single length. As soon as
the piece is over the box closes until another button is pressed.
The repertoire has a range from John Cage to John Zorn, many pieces have been
commissioned for this project. Some works also contain elements of music theater.
This project is a co-production of the Bayerische Staatsoper and the ensemble L'ART POUR L'ART. Its world premier took place at the Musikbiennale München. There have been further performances at the Biennale in Berlin and the Musikbiennale in Hannover.
